In the dead of night, inn owner Mariah Eller is called to the inn to defuse a presumably bad situation involving a group of rowdy, drunken men.  Unbeknownst to her, one of the unruly men is none other than the future king, the Prince of Wales.  Her plan to calm them down involves music (to soothe the savage beasts) and plenty of rum (to knock them out).  One man in their group wasn’t raucous – Jack St. Lawrence sat off to the side, quietly watching with his golden eyes.  After the other men either passed out or went to bed, Jack asks Mariah to help him take the prince up to his room.  While there, they share a heated moment that Jack immediately puts a stop to.

A week later, Jack and one of the other men from that night inform Mariah that the prince (who was under the assumption that he had bedded Mariah that night) was quite taken with her and wants her to be his mistress.  Since she is a widow, the prince first wants Mariah to marry again to protect against any inconvenient consequences.  Mariah isn’t happy with the proposition but knows the repercussions if she refuses the prince.  Jack produces a list of eligible men who will look the other way (thus earning everlasting favor) until the prince is finished with her.  Mariah insists on meeting each man and checking them out first.  Jack accompanies her, but Mariah makes it less than easy for him.  During the “husband hunt”, she comes up with a list of her own full of attributes that she is looking for in a mate, and conveniently each quality seems to fit Jack.  Before long, Jack finds her hard to resist and begins to want her for himself.

Make Me Yours is the third title in the new line of Harlequin Blaze Historicals (yay!) and I enjoyed it very much.  This story brings two very different types of characters together in Victorian England.  Where Mariah is provocative and spirited, Jack is reserved and serious.  Ms. Krahn did a wonderful job of giving them these traits without making them cross the line of being too much.  Mariah purposely uses her feminine wiles to goad Jack and break down his conventional barriers.  Jack takes his job as one of the prince’s intimates very seriously but soon finds it very difficult to keep that in perspective around the tempting Mariah.  He was stuck between a rock and a hard place and I loved watching him get flustered at every single turn.  If you’re looking for a quick-reading, pleasant historical with compelling characters, look no further than Make Me Yours!
