julia_quinn_what_happens_in_londonI’ve been reading almost nothing but paranormals for the past few months, so when Julia Quinn’s What Happens in London crossed my desk I was excited and began reading it almost immediately. I just finished it and let me just say – Julia is back! Miss Quinn’s newest historical features Olivia Bevelstoke; you might remember her as the sister-in-law and best friend of Miranda, the heroine from her book The Secret Diaries of Miranda Cheever. Olivia is beautiful, charming, smart (I like that in a heroine) and astute. The hero, Sir Harry Valentine, is a mixture of charm and intelligence with the ability to play off his heroine with grace and perfect timing.  Bright, clean, crisp and witty dialogue coupled with characters that are both richly drawn and charismatic …

time_travelerBooks to movies – I’m forever in a quandary as to whether I want to see an ‘adaptation’ of a book.  Personally,  I enjoy the images my mind creates while reading, so I’m not usually  eager to see the film version.    I’ve been disappointed before.   For example,  Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez is a beautifully written book and love story.  The movie didn’t come close to capturing it.  The House of Spirits by Isabel Allende is fabulous, telling the story of four generations, incorporating magic with such a unique style you won’t want to put it down.  However, the movie was dreadful. In fact, if you saw the movie first you probably wouldn’t want to read the book, and that is a damn shame.  Clan

Romance, especially paranormal romance, and science-fiction/fantasy novels are “outperforming all other categories” at Borders, says buyer Micha Hershman. “There is some escapism going on. There’s clearly an element of ‘How do I get out of the daily grind?’ ” Romances new to the list include Montana Creeds: Dylan by Linda Lael Miller (No. 9), The Grand Finale by Janet Evanovich (No. 12) and One Day at a Time by Danielle Steel (No. 13).

The top 150 USA Today best sellers.…
