    The Reading Room

suzuki_novellaWe’ve all read in the bathroom.  We might not admit it, but you’ve seen friends, relatives and colleagues casually tuck reading material under their arms or in their purses as they headed toward the john. Some people even stock magazines in their bathrooms for their guests.  It was only a matter time before some enterprising company realized the john doubled as a ‘reading room’. Hayashi Paper, a Japanese paper manufacturer recently ‘published’  Koji Suzuki’s latest novella “Drop” on the one household item we simply cannot live without- toilet paper.  This is not a misprint.  And I’m not joking.

The author’s previous works “Dark Water, “Spiral” and “Ring,” are all acclaimed works and Mr. Suzuki is one of Japan’s leading horror writers.  While those books were printed and bound in book format, “Drop” is ‘published’ on toilet paper.  It’s a horror story about an evil spirit that inhabits a toilet bowl.  According to Julian Ryall’s article in London’s Telegragh, “His latest work is set in a public toilet and plays on Japanese superstitions that ghosts and evil spirits inhabit the smallest room in the house, which is why they were traditionally relegated to the most distant part of the home. Parents still tell naughty children that a hairy hand will seize them when they have their pants around their ankles if they misbehave and drag them down into the dark water below”

Now this gives new meaning to the phrase ‘scared sh_ _ tless.”

How funny! I guess it would only work if you were single. I’d hate to miss something from the story after someone else used the bathroom!
