When reading stories that reunite old loves, it sometimes strikes me how easily trust and understanding return in the face of undeniable physical chemistry. And in a world where most people fantasize about ‘the one who got away’, a story like that one has a broad appeal.
But every once in a while, a story comes along that’s refreshingly, honestly, realistic, where an author chooses to show the hard road of reconciliation, even when it might even be understandable to do otherwise. Hope Tarr’s ‘Every Breath You Take’ is one of these books.
At the core of this book lie reunited lovers Alex and Cole. Cole met Alex while on an undercover mission with the FBI. Now in private security, Cole is responsible for protecting Alex while she’s on a very important business trip…for her Fiancee’s company.
A fiance, a past tied up in secrets and lies…and undeniable chemistry. Throw together and mix with death threats and unbelievable danger in a beautiful South American paradise. What happens? Does chemistry win out?
Tarr paints a realistic, yet beautiful picture of a couple’s struggle between chemistry, secrets and lies. Moments of passion brought on in the heat of danger vie with memories and an overwhelming realization that the source of the threats is closer than it appears.
So, again, does love win out in the end? Or do Alex and Cole find themselves in a situation where love doesn’t conquer all? I won’t spoil the book’s ending by answering the question, but I will tell you that it is an ending which is hard fought, well written and absolutely well deserved.
