It started for me about six or seven years ago. One day, while browsing on for a hotter than usual romance, I stumbled upon a book called “Cooking Up A Storm” by Emma Holly. The book was published by Black Lace, a British publisher. The story was about the owner of a restaurant named Abby, who embarks upon what can only be called a sexual adventure after hiring a new chef, named Storm (yeah, OK the name is silly — the romance is HOT!). The book itself spoke to a side of me that I wasn’t expecting. One that enjoyed daring sex, sex that was definitely outside the expected for mainstream romance. I knew it as soon as I finished the book, that Emma Holly would become an auto-buy for me. And I can say now unequivocally that I consider Emma Holly to be the gold standard in erotic romance.

Her newest book is called Demon’s Fire. It continues a series that first began in her paranormals The Demon’s Daughter and Prince of Ice. This is the story of Prince Pahndir, who was a secondary character in the first two books. Pahndir is a Yama, basically an alien race, but one that is very compatible with humans. Pahndir was a captive of a Pillow House (house of prostitution) in the first two books, but now has been freed. He’s moved to the town of Bahmjran and opened his own Pillow House, where his employees service the needs of the town, and in particular people working on a nearby anthropological dig. One day as he sits outside of his Pillow House, a young man and woman catch his eye. He connects almost immediately with the young man, Charles, who is clearly intrigued by Pahndir, but also captivated by Beth, the young woman. Beth is equally entranced by both Pahndir and Charles. Thus begins the story of their discovery of each other and the gradual falling in love of all three.

This book is tremendously sexual in nature. Because it is a paranormal, Holly is able to weave sex throughout the story without it feeling forced in anyway. The love scenes are varied and creative. As a Yama, Pahndir has certain physiological differences that make sex with him unique for both Beth and Charles. While the ending of the story is non-traditional, it was a credible one for me and I enjoyed it very much. While it’s not my favorite Emma Holly, she has created an interesting world that works well with the strong sexual nature of this series. It should be noted that this story does feature non-traditional sexual encounters that might not work for everyone. But the series continues to be a fun and interesting backdrop for some spectacularly well written love scenes.

MK, Emma Holly is one of my go to authors -and now I’ll be adding this to my TBR pile. I find that while her books are definitely HOT – I really like her characterizations – she never let’s me down and I feel that her books always pull me in from the very first page.

Marisa- I think the biggest key to Emma Holly is knowing that her love scenes don’t always feature just one guy/one girl. Very often, there’s a third.

I realize that’s becoming much more common in erotic romance, but it’s not for everyone. I do love Emma’s books though. I did hear from her recently though that she doesn’t have any contemporary erotic romance on the docket right now, which makes me sad. Her book Personal Assets is my all time favorite e-rom.
