With RWA right around the corner and thousands of women around the country prepping for the big week, there’s lots to do.  Dusting off the gowns, packing the right shoes, finding the perfect outfit.

With all this preparation, It got me thinking – sometimes things don’t always worked out as planned.

I remember going on a vacation with so many expectations only to have my bags arrive 4 days later.  On a five day stay, it’s a bit late, don’t you think?  My perfect bathing suit, the one that hides all sins didn’t arrive. The dresses I had so painstakingly purchased, the cute little strappy sandals, the perfect white pants… none of it arrived.  You really don’t want to know what I walked around in for four days – I picked up things here and there but it wasn’t the same.  Make no mistake, my vacation wasn’t totally ruined, because I refused to have a bad time.  But it threw a wrench, and I had to improvise when all I wanted to do was vacate, as in be on vacation.

Any one ever have a slight disaster before a big event or vacation?

Sometimes I think ‘disaster’ is my middle name. Can’t think of a time that I had a big event come up and either I a got a big stain on my blouse right before I left the house, or went for a job interview and the train stalled, or I went on vacation and left my passport at home. Yes, sad but true. It’s only when I have nothing planned that everything goes smoothly.

It wasn’t exactly a vacation. We had to go to my husband’s stepfather’s funeral. He forgot to put the kids’ suitcase in the car. January. Maine. No clothes. We wound up borrowing stuff from my mother-in-law’s neighbor, all mismatched stripes and plaids which made me crazy even though I knew there were more important things to worry about!

We usually travel very light, carry-on only. But as we’re getting older and more decrepit, we’re checking baggage. I would hate to lose my stuff. I know tons of people who never got bags back ever. I make sure jewelry and medication are right in my handbag (or on me or in me!)or carry-on.

I hope you have a great time in Dallas!

I had a major panic moment today. Who was I kidding to want to go to a conference where women show up in ball gowns?! I have NEVER owned one; still don’t. I have been to nerdy engineering type of conferences without blinking, but RWA scares the socks off me.

Maggie, you’re a riot. Meds and/or jewelry *in* you?!

Speaking of luggage disasters, KLM lost my luggage somewhere in Amsterdam on an international trip into Asia. I was there for a birthday celebration. It was a short seven-day trip, and I picked up my luggage on the way back. Yeah! An Asian country without anything other than jewelry, toothbrush, nightgown, and book. Thank goodness for the book!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Guess I have been fortunate. No such disasters for me. Several years ago, the dh and I went to Israel for 2 weeks and I remember be told to make sure I pack a change of clothes in my carry on bag just in case the checked luggage didn’t make it to Tel Aviv when we did. That is something that I still do to this day.

What?! You don’t think a nightgown is a formal enough outfit? Well, let me tell you, my nightgown was sexaaay.
