Andrea Ponders the Scent of a Book

I love the smell of books.  I like to flip the pages, close my eyes and take a big sniff.  To me, there’s something rather soothing about it.  I tell my husband that someone could make a ton of money off of me if they could put that scent on a scratch-n-sniff sticker…or on one of those little things you hang in your car.  He just rolls his eyes and says I’m weird, but I love him anyway.

I also love the smell of a bookstore.  The cool rush of air and scents that hit you right when you walk in the door.  The smell of those books begging to be bought mingled with the scent of fresh coffee. Mmmmm… it’s one of my favorite smells.  And I miss it

When we lived in Florida, we had a major bookstore close enough to us that I could go to the bookstore at least once a week.  Upon moving to Georgia, I was devastated to discover that we had no bookstore close by.  The nearest one is over 30 miles away… through lots of traffic… and I hate traffic.  That leaves me little choice but to do most of my book shopping on line, with the occasional purchase at Wal-Mart.

Needless to say, I was thrilled to learn that we were finally–finally–getting a B&N right down the road from where we live!! You can’t know how excited I am!  Or perhaps you do.  After all, we all love books here.

So tell me, am I the only weird person who likes to sniff books? Or that likes to stand in the middle of a bookstore (romance section, of course) and take a big whiff? Please tell me I’m not the only one.

It’s not so much the smell of books – for me it’s the ‘feel’ of a book. And of course, I love being in a bookstore – just looking at all those books – it’s always great, that feeling of possibility.

I would say the “smell” is part of it for me. I love the whole package. Walking into a bookstore or library is like walking into a virtual travel agent office for me.

I am staggered by the possibilities. Pretty much whatever you want to experience is available to you. Diamonds in the rough are hidden here and there waiting to be discovered. Of course, a good librarian or attendant can be indepensable in this situation.

My family thinks I am weird, too.
You are in very good company.

As long as they aren’t moldy books! LOL.

Seriously though, I do love the smell of a new book and the feel of a book. There is nothing like running your fingers along row after row of books. I could wander a bookstore or library for hours.

Smell is of paramount importance to me, even more than sight or feel of books. I loved new school years because of the smell of the books. Notebooks smell different, paperbacks smell different, and so do four-color textbooks.

Sorry, Andrea, can’t say that I smell my books! Although the topic reminds me of those papers the teacher would hand out in elementary school and everyone would get high on the smell. I can relate, however, to the smell of the bookstore. Coffee smells delicious even if it is disgusting.
