Which ones have you read? Which of those do you recommend? Which ones are you dying to read?

This month’s topic is SECONDARY CHARACTERS! We all know that the hero and heroine are the stars and main focus of the books we read. But sometimes a secondary character or two can steal our hearts as well. If done well, they enhance the romance and/or the story as a whole. Many eventually get their own story and some do not (though we wish they would). And some find their HEA as a secondary romance. Colin Bridgerton is one of my favorite secondary characters.
We read about him and his wry humor in three books before he finally found his happy ending in Julia Quinn’s Romancing Mister Bridgerton. Logan Jennsen is another favorite of mine. He was a secondary character in four of Jacquie D’Alessandro’s books before finding his HEA in Tempted at Midnight. A secondary character that I adored that never got her own book is Becky Shelton of Victoria Alexander’s Effington Family series. Maybe someday . . . And lastly, my favorite secondary romance has to be Gideon Shaw and Lady Olivia Marsden from Lisa Kleypas’s Again the Magic. I enjoyed their romance just as much, if not more than Aline and McKenna’s. It was such a sweet love story.

Who are some of your favorite secondary characters, both ones that have and have not had their own stories? What are some of your favorite secondary romances? Tell us and one random poster (living within the United States) will win a book!

Until October, happy reading!

This month’s topic is HEROINES! Last month we talked about our all-time favorite and favorite types of heroes, so this month we’re dishing about the ladies. There are so many types of heroines. Some are feisty and adventurous, many are solid and dependable. Some speak their mind and take no bull from anyone, while others have special abilities or magic powers. Some are society misses or the “girl next door” and many are courtesans or servants. Some own their own business or run a ranch while others struggle with a 9-5 job. Some are outright beautiful and some are “plain…

Summer’s here! As I’m typing up this blog, my kids are enjoying their last day of school, my brother is driving out to visit and my sister is preparing for her high school graduation. Needless to say, I have been and will continue to stay busy for the next few weeks. At times like this, reading a good book helps me to wind down and relax.

This month’s topic is quick and easy: Paperback vs. Hardcover books. Which do you prefer? When it comes to price, I prefer paperbacks, for obvious reasons. And since most books are published that way, I’m a happy camper. Over the years, I have bought some of my favorite books by favorite authors in hardcover just because I want to have a “nice” copy. Plus, they’ll…

So, what about you? Do you prefer paperback or hardcover books? Why or why not? Who are some of your favorite authors that are published in hardcover? Which authors do you think that it will only be a matter of time before they’re published in hardcover? Tell us and one random poster (living within the United States) will win a book!

I don’t know about you, but I am thrilled that the weather is finally starting to warm up! Though I am scratching my head wondering where the cool weather went. It was here for like a week and then poof! I went straight from running the heat to running the air conditioning with not much time to just open the windows and enjoy the breeze. Ah, well.

This month’s topic is: BOOK TLC. As I was dusting my lovely books the other day (yes, I dust them regularly), I came up with this topic because I know how anal I am when it comes to the tender loving care of my books and was curious if there were others who share my sick obsession–er, I mean, the same practice. Seriously, if you saw my books, you would think you were at a bookstore because I take such good care of them. They all look brand new . . . unless I had to buy them used for whatever reason, but that’s rare and only leads to another sick obsession of having to buy them new. I’ve even had an author ask me while signing all of her books for me if I’d even read them. She was joking, of course, but still. No spine cracks, no dog eared pages and absolutely no writing or marks on the pages for this girl. Nuh-uh, no way.

March is one of my favorite months. Not only is my wedding anniversary in March, but also the first day of spring!! And I am so ready for spring. I’m not fond of the cold, which probably stems from the fact that I was born and raised in Florida. And as I’m writing this blog, it’s actually snowing . . . in March . . . in Atlanta! Don’t get me wrong, it’s beautiful and my kids are ecstatic, but I’m ready for spring to get here.

This month’s topic is EXCERPTS. Do you read them? For me, it all depends. If it’s a book I’m familiar with or part of a series I’m reading, I usually don’t read it. I’d rather be surprised when I read the book. However, if it’s been a while since an author’s last book, I will occasionally read an excerpt to get a small taste to tide me over until a book releases. I’ve heard other people say that reading an excerpt gives them a sense of déjà vu when they check out a book in the store and don’t end up buying it because they think they’ve already read it. I will almost always read an excerpt of a book by an author I’ve never read before and/or that I’ve heard a lot of buzz about to get a sense of feel for the author’s voice to see if I’d actually like to read the book. When I do read an excerpt, I’d have to say that my favorite kind is when the hero and heroine first meet. There’s just something about those initial sparks. The bottom line is: as long as an author has left a reader wanting more, I think they’ve done their job. How do you feel about excerpts? Love ‘em or hate ‘em? Do you read them? Why or why not? What is your favorite kind of excerpt? When the hero and heroine first meet? First kiss? Or something steamier? Tell us and one random poster (living within the United States) will win a book!

Until April, happy reading!

February brings more new releases and a good reason to eat chocolate (as if we need a reason!). Chocolate and books — what could be better than that? Around my house, Valentine’s Day is all about the kids. They get lots of sweet treats and exchange Valentines with their classmates. Plus, my son’s birthday is the day before. Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? If so, how? With someone special, with friends, with kids or as a family?

This month’s topic is TITLES. As with covers, a title should “fit the book” and express something about the story. Many are spot on and catchy, some are down-right silly and a few leave me scratching my head wondering what on earth someone was thinking. I like the ones that play on movie, TV or song titles (Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series comes to mind). Many use alliteration — I like those. Recently, I’ve noticed that a lot of book titles (historical mostly) are especially long. I don’t necessarily have a problem with them (though they can be a mouthful) but have heard others balk at them. To me, it’s all about what is inside that counts. What about you?

Does a title have any influence on whether you buy a book or not? Do you like the longer titles or do you prefer shorter or one word titles? And finally, what are some of your favorite titles? Tell us and one random poster (living within the United States) will win a book!

Until March, happy reading!

It’s hard to believe that 2008 is officially over and that 2009 is here. Did you make a New Year’s resolution? If so, have you stuck to it? My New Year’s resolution is to be more organized and I’m trying to get into that mode — slowly, but surely. And speaking of new, this year I’m going to try something a little different with my new releases blogs. Each month I’ll blog and solicit opinions about a certain part of a book or book/reading habits and such.

This month’s topic is COVERS. A book’s cover should represent the book and it’s the first thing we see at the store. Some covers have a clinch scene, some have either a man’s chest or a woman’s back, some have an object or a landscape and some have just eyes or a mouth. I prefer all types of covers as long as it fits the book. My biggest pet peeve is when something doesn’t, like when the person’s hair color doesn’t match. Perhaps I’m being petty, but it bugs me.

So, my questions for you are: What kind of cover do you prefer? What is your favorite cover of all time? Do you mind if a publisher changes the style of the covers in the middle of a series? And do you have any pet peeves when it comes to covers? Tell us and one random poster (living within the United States) will win a book!

Until February, happy reading!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. And now the holiday season is officially in full swing! Many people woke up early (or never went to sleep) to shop on Black Friday and if you are one of those people, I hope your experience was well worth it. As for me, I slept in. I did Black Friday one time and I don’t think I’ll ever do it again. I actually do a lot of my shopping online. As much as I love to go out and shop in the stores for that perfect gift, I’ve found that with two kids it’s a whole lot easier to shop for Christmas presents from the comforts of home. And with great deals and free shipping, you really can’t beat it!
