Book Club Discussion Questions

- How does the Victorian era’s constraints, social rules / mores, class systems, affect Percy and The Guard? How do they buck convention and tradition? In what ways to they adhere to it?

- To you as a reader, what is appealing about the late 19th Century? What’s different about that time versus the present and what’s the same?

-Discuss Percy as a heroine. What was compelling about her? Difficult about her? In what ways is she a traditional romance heroine, in what ways was she different? And then Alexi as a hero?

-What genres of fiction do you see represented in this book? What were the genres within the book you found yourself most drawn to?

-What do you think of the many varied and often difficult relationships within The Guard? Who’s your favorite secondary character? Minor character?

-Many types of supernatural phenomena, evil and good, are showcased in this book, in addition to mythological aspects. What of these were the most memorable?

-Discuss the voice of the novel. What sorts of emotions / thoughts / imagery did the narrative style evoke?
