Q&A with CARRIE
LOFTY

Q: What song do you put on when you’re driving in your car?

A: At the moment, it’s “Absolute” by The Fray. But it has to fit
my mood, the weather, and what writing ideas I’m playing with. All things lead
back to the writing!

Q: What is your favorite Classic TV Show?

A: “The Young Riders,” which aired in the late 80s/early 90s when
everyone was fascinated by the Old West. I wanted to be Lou, the girl who disguised
herself as a man so she could ride on the Pony Express, and her sweet boyfriend,
The Kid. I have to admit that my love affair with this show lead to my master’s
thesis on the impact of Old West outlaws on Reconstruction-era society.

Q: What is your favorite current TV Show?

A: It was “Life,” but that’s been canceled. Among reality shows,
I can never get enough of “So You Think You Can Dance,” but among
scripted shows, I love “Lie to Me,” with Tim Roth. There’s so much
to learn about the expression of human emotion, and again, it feeds back into
my work.

Q: Tell us about your favorite pair of shoes?

A: A pair of black Skechers flats with Japanese koi embroidery. Comfortable,
practical, and beautiful!

Q: What is the worst job you ever had?

A: Corn detasseling! I was 13, and it was horrible. But I saved enough money
that summer to buy a guitar, so I was proud and happy.

Q: What is the best job you ever had?

A: Aside from writing?? I loved teaching history when I was a graduate student
at Ohio State University. I was one of those crazy grads who enjoyed teaching
more than research, which perhaps explains why I didn’t stay in academia.

I write because….because I always have. Because I love the words in my head.
Because my imaginary friends are creepy-real. And because the satisfaction of
creating something beautiful is just the best feeling.

WHAT
A SCOUNDREL WANTS:
In Sherwood Forest, outcast warrior Will Scarlet rescues
a blind woman who dreams of fire. Now, to defeat the new Sheriff of Nottingham,
he’ll need to become a hero for the ages. It’s amazing what a scoundrel will
do for love…

Hi Carrie – loved What a Scoundrel Wants – I’m wondering what’s next for you – and also, what the heck is corn detasseling?

Oh, btw, big SYTYCD fan here… who are you rooting for this season?

    Carrie~
    Corn detasseling? Do tell.
I vaguely recall The Young Riders in that time frame (late 80s/early 90s) Maybe I’ll have to find it & check it out.
Congrats on your release! Looking forward to #2.
    Kris

Hey Carrie! Love, love, love LIE TO ME. It was one of my favorite shows last season (along with Castle).

    Hi Marisa,

I’m so glad you enjoyed my debut!

Corn detasseling is where unfortunate teens and immigrants walk along hundreds of rows of corn and pluck the tassels off the top of each plant. That way more expensive Chosen Corn, with their tassels left intact, can hybridize with cheaper stock. It’s hot, long, nasty work!

SYTYCD: Evan! I love him. He and Randi are so much fun together. Melissa is my favorite girl this year, and she and Ade are a wonderful partnership too. You?

As for what’s up next: Scoundrel’s Kiss, which follows Meg’s troubled sister Ada to Spain, will be released in January. I just got the cover flats yesterday. SO pretty!

My free serial romance, Serenade, set in 1804 Austria, is also continuing. New chapters will go live tomorrow, set to wrap up during the first week of September. And Through the Garden Gate, an anthology that features “Sundial,” my time travel story set in 1950s Italy, will be released in December.

    Thanks for stopping by today!

Mmmm…”Castle”! Nathan Fillion is too, too much. I think we’re in good company here, Buffie. Good TV taste all around!

And Kris, I have no idea how someone would view “The Young Riders” if she watched it today. I mean, it’s 20 years old! It’s probably well beyond cheesy now :)

I can relate to the Corn detassling, but I cut weeds out of beans until I pulled the hook through my ankle. I think what I hated the most were the grasshoppers. They were everywhere. Shiver

Kimberly, your comment about grasshoppers flashed me to the Little House on the Prairie book where they’re overrun with grasshoppers. It seemed totally shudder-worthy.

On my way to check out your cover flats, Carrie.

I love “Life,” too. Damian Lewis is one of the best actors around. The show is well written and the cast is awesome. I love the partnership between Crews and Reese.
