In Deidre Knight’s Gods of Midnight series we meet 7 Spartans who have been given the gift of immortality by Ares, the god of war. In return they must spend eternity protecting humans against every form of evil. Unfortunately, Ares is not what you would call a benevolent god; and as often happens with gods who are bored with the eternity of it all, they change the rules of the game just to spice things up. Now one wonders if Ares is more foe than friend.  In RED KISS and RED FIRE Deidre Knight has introduced us to these magnificent warriors as they make their home in present day Savannah, Georgia and begin on a path that might change the game and their immortal lives forever.

KING LEONIDAS’S PRIVATE DOSSIER

When the wonderful women here at Romance Novel TV invited me to blog about my Gods of Midnight series, we decided I’d write a refresher look at this band of sexy, immortal Spartans.  I’ve actually come up with a unique spin on our idea: I’m going to provide King Leonidas’s dossier for each of his warriors.

Then,  later on today, we’re going to host a trivia contest to see how closely you know your Spartans and the rules of the world they live in! So have fun and read on! (The trivia contest posts at 12:30 and 2 random posters will win either a copy of RED KISS or RED FIRE)

AJAX PETRAKOS, Captain

• A disciplined and brave leader.
• Fought more boldly and valiantly than any other warrior at Thermopylae.

For several months earlier this year, Captain Petrakos gave himself over to uncut wine and expensive clothing, as eternity finally began to take a toll on him.  Until he met his prophesied love, Shay Angel.  Since meeting and marrying this human-who became immortal to spend eternity with him-this hero’s focus has returned.  He now serves the Spartan corps with honor and distinction, but remains concerned about his missing servant, River.

RIVER KASSANDROS, Helot Servant

• First to step forward to accept our immortal bargain, and renamed for the Rive r Styx in honor of his rebirth.
• Servant to Ajax in life, and throughout eternity as a result of Ares’s binding arrangement between the two warriors.

River can transform into any weapon that Ajax wishes to summon in battle, and possesses the power of life and death.  Current status: lost to our corps.  He was in dagger form during a battle this past April, when Sable tossed him into Savannah’s Wilmington River.  Although we continue our searching, so far this man remains MIA.

Aristos Petrakos, Lieutenant

• Impetuous and full of life, Ari remains the glue that holds our corps together-although I doubt he even realizes it.

His irreverent sense of humor often provides the cure when morale runs low and the men are weary.  I often thank the gods that Ari is part of our immortal band because without his wit, our tempers would surely flare more often.  It seems this peacemaker learned his skills as the middle brother between an eldest and youngest who possess both tempers and strong opinions.

Nikos, Lieutenant

• Aggressive.
• Strong.
• Stubborn.
• Possesses a mouth so occasionally rude that even I wish I could level him with my fist.
• No wonder the crew sometimes feel that way.

I have always suspected that private demons plague this man; more than that, I alone know some of the dark secrets that he keeps.  Secrets that motivate his occasionally cruel remarks.

Straton, Lieutenant

• The bald one.

Or, I suppose he shaves off the hair he once wore long as we went into battle.  I often wonder why a Spartan who took such pride in his hair-it was a sign of our prowess, after all-now discards that show of strength.  Never one with many words, Straton has grown more quiet and withdrawn with every passing century.  I am concerned about this warrior of mine, for Nikos confides that even he cannot pry words out of this stoic fighter.  But it’s not just his silence that confounds me as a leader; it’s that he becomes more brutal and heartless with every passing skirmish or battle.  Almost as if he left his soul back amid the blood and soil of Thermopylae.

Kalias Petrakos, Captain

• Forceful.
• Severe… as different from his younger brothers as the moon is the sun.
• But also equally dependable and loyal.

When I think upon Kalias, I understand how Ari learned to survive by employing wry humor and building bridges among those around him.  I think I shall advise Ari to get him outside our battle zones more often.

KING LEONIDAS, SELF-ASSESSMENT

Confidentially, I struggle to make sense out of this immortal bargain that we made with Ares, god of war.  We were willing to sell our souls to this eternal service, forfeiting our passage into Elysium.  For the salvation of Sparta, our families and Greece itself, we accepted the god’s offer without question, agreeing to protect mankind.  Now?  I am weary, unsure that the god should be trusted at all.  Perhaps he only saw us as eternal playthings, the ultimate weapons for creating his only love: bloodlust.  Daily, I seek divine inspiration, appealing to the Highest God of all… as I am beginning to suspect that Ares has turned his back on us after all these many years.
