If it wasn’t for bad luck, Samantha (Sammi) Matthews would have no luck at all.  After finding her boyfriend in bed with another woman, Sammi moves to Tulsa to take the curator position at the local Art Deco Museum.  She was offered the position by the board members after the current curator suffered a heart attack and announced her retirement, only to have the older woman rescind it by returning from her leave.  She wants to buy the little art deco home she’s currently leasing month by month, only to have her landlord deny her.  She took in a dog for a friend who couldn’t keep him anymore, only to discover he has a taste for anything leather.  And when she finally gets up the nerve to start dating again, she inadvertently injures her dates – one gets a cracked rib, one receives a broken leg and she gives the other one a black eye.  Almost at the end of her rope, Sammi answers an ad and calls a life coach to help her manage her problems.  Though, she may have gotten more than she bargained for.

After his brother witnesses a mob hit at a local pizza place, special agent for the FBI, Chase Jones, feels responsible for his brother’s fate since he was the one that suggested the restaurant.  When Luke is placed in Witness Protection, Chase agrees to help him by filling in for him with a few of his over-the-phone clients.  Luke is a sports psychologist turned life coach teaching people how to score in life.  Chase figures, how hard can that be? Heh.  After listening to a 44 year old (a wonderfully hilarious secondary character!) who still lives with his mother whine about said mother, Chase “meets” Sammi Matthews, a young woman with a sexy voice and self-proclaimed Murphy’s Law type issues.  Chase doesn’t believe her problems are as bad as she claims until he encounters her (as himself) while out running and gets his shorts ripped and wallet mauled by her dog and then hot coffee spilled in his lap after she convinces him to come back to her place for a cup of coffee.  Regardless of these antics and even though she doesn’t meet his usual specific criteria when looking for Miss Right, Chase finds himself attracted to Sammi.  At first, Chase plans to see her only long enough to build up her self-confidence in regards to dating, but the longer he coaches Sammi as Luke and dates her as himself, the harder it becomes for him to keep the two personas straight and the guiltier he feels.  Because he soon wonders if what he believed he wanted in a woman has changed after getting to know Sammi Matthews or if she fits his criteria more than he first thought.

How to Score is the first book I’ve read by Robin Wells and I enjoyed it and its array of fascinating characters.  There was never a dull moment!  Right from the start I was thoroughly entertained.  Chase and Sammi were funny and cute and their chemistry was tangible.  The part when they first meet while jogging had me in stitches and was one of the funniest scenes I’ve read in a while.  The secondary storyline was nice, though I did feel like it started to take away from the main romance just a bit.  By far, the best part was the groveling scene at the end.  It was sweet, hilarious and absolutely perfect!  So, if you’re a fan of romantic comedies and looking for a fun, fast read, pick up How to Score and enjoy!

Andrea – I’ve only recently become a fan of romantic comedies when it comes to books. But I’ve always been a fan of romantic comedy movies. There’s something about the mishaps, and ‘mistakes’ that bring a smile to my face.

Andrea I started laughing at : After finding her boyfriend in bed with another woman, Sammi moves to Tulsa to take the curator position at the local Art Deco Museum. She was offered the position by the board members after the current curator suffered a heart attack and announced her retirement, only to have the older woman rescind it by returning from her leave.

Sammi sounds like my kind of heroine. Or is it that Sammi sounds a lot like me?

I don’t read enough romantic comedies. The past several books I’ve read have been high on adventure but no so much on the high jinks. Thanks so much for the great review.

You know, Maria, I discovered romantic comedies (books) about a year and a half ago and wondered where they’ve been all my life. I love them!

    Thanks, Marisa!

Thanks, PJ. Isn’t the groveling scene at the end just the best?!?! Loved it!
