Fox Network has announced their new Fall television shows. Included in the dramas slated for midseason launch are PAST LIFE. Ok, not only am I very excited that this new drama deals with past lives, the series is based on M.J. Rose’s October 2008 book THE REINCARNATIONIST. For those of you have not read the book yet, its a compelling mystery along the lines of the DaVinci Code. The book in a nut shell: After a bomb explodes in Rome photojournalist Josh Ryder is never the same. He begins experiencing memories that are not his own. In fact they belong to a priest named Julius who lived 1600 years earlier. Josh wants to find out why Julius’ memories are his, and so his quest begins to find answers that may lie in one of his past lives. I’m not sure how THE REINCARNATIONIST will translate to a weekly television show. I’m sure it will have your procedural element to it. Perhaps, and I hope this is true, they will reach for the larger elements with a continuing story arc that will have us guessing week to week what will happen next.
The major players behind the TV show PAST LIFE have a proven track record so I expect great things from them. Executive producer David Hudgins was the co-executive producer of Friday Night Lights and Everwood and director Deran Sarafian credits include Lost, House and CSI all critically acclaimed television shows. All have smart writing, direction and acting. They know how to tell a story both visually and verbally. Yes, these people know how to make TV, so I for one am looking forward to how Rose’s book inspires them.

This looks like it could be a really good show. It’s a fascinating premise, the Exec. Producer and Director certainly have impressive credits (I loved Everwood!) and I like the look of the cast. Richard Schiff is a terrific actor and was always one of my favorites on West Wing.
