Where’s your inner biker chick? Fortunately or un, mine is in my head. Or, in this case, on the pages of my new book, ONE DEADLY SIN.
Although I live a ridiculously ordinary real life, a part of me longs to wear leather, ride a Harley, and flip off to everyone. I’d never have the nerve in real life—too much wanting to be liked, I guess. But what fun to dream—and in my case—write about someone who couldn’t care less.
Edie Swann, the heroine of One Deadly Sin, is my fantasy made real. She comes complete with the requisite Harley, a couple of strategically-placed tattoos, and lots of black mascara. And, as Barbara Vey put it in her Publisher’s Weekly blog, a take-no-prisoners attitude.
Man, whenever I try on that vibe, things never work out the way I expect. Mostly I get yelled at, which renders me speechless, and then my inner choir girl cringes and wants to scurry away.
But not Edie. She wants revenge, and she’s in it for the long haul. Or so she thinks.
But that’s a tale that takes a book to tell.
What I want to talk about here is me and my inner biker chick. Or, even better, you and your inner biker chick.
Have you got one?
Is she based on a character in a book or movie?
Some of my faves are:

Aeryn Sun from Farscape(L), and Zoe Washburne from Firefly (R)

Sarah Connor from The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Hmm. Two soldiers and a guerilla mother fighting to keep her son alive. And neither one rides a Harley. (But check out the guns! What IS it with women and guns?)
All three are tough as they come. They all know how to battle to the death if necessary and they all struggle with love. And at least the first two look great in leather…
So…now it’s your turn. Spill.
Is there an inner biker chick inside you?
Who do you call on when you need a little ’tude?
I conjured up Edie Swann. Who would you conjure up?

Hi Annie! Glad you could be with us today on RNTV. I’ve read PJ’s review of your book and ordered it – can’t wait to read it.
My inner biker chick is definitely Sidney from the TV show Alias. I love her. Whenever I’m feeling the need to bring a little attitude to a situation I let “Sidney” come out and play. She’s got that rare combination of being a good listener as well as a good ‘communicator’. When she doesn’t like something she hears she communicates her displeasure immediately and with great results. She also has the ability to get out of any situation – she uses her brains and brawn to arrive at conclusions that are satisfactory. She has that take no prisoners attitude but in addition she also has that ability to think on her feet and size up a situation quickly. I love how smart she is. Her ability to scale buildings, fight off 6 men with her bare hands while running in high heels and not breaking a nail, as well as her excellent computer skills and ability to speak 10 languages is also a plus.

Hi Annie welcome to RNTV -
My inner biker chick is Kate from LOST. She’s not afraid to put people down, and I mean down as in – they’re cold and underneath the ground. But, she has compassion and warmth. She is pretty much fearless.

Welcome, Ms Solomon!
I have to say that the “inner biker chick” reminds me of the Rose is Rose comics :sheepish
: I too wish there were a Vicky the Biker somewhere in me.
The one I would conjure up in extreme situations (and I believe I have, a couple of times) is actually Sara O’Connor… from the first movie. Normal gal, faced with imminent danger and truly unbelievable circumstances, she struggles but overcomes the challenge.
Yeah, I wish I were like her more

Who else, but Nikita from La Femme Nikita? She kicked spy-butt long before anyone else. Yeah, when I’m in biker chick mode, I’m nine inches taller and 60 pounds lighter. *karate chop* Take that!

LOL! Annie, I LOVE the image of you in leather on a Harley flipping people off as ride along.
I loved all the characters you mention and kick-ass heroines in general. I think my inner biker chick is actually Selene from the Underworld movies. She wears leather, has guns, and is a kick-ass vampire soldier. If I were way skinnier, I’d dress up like her at Dragon*Con.

Oh yeah, Joss Whedon does excellent kick-ass heroines. My inner bad grrl is a work in progress, but I’m definitely a roundhouse kicker. Me and Marie-Nicole would be bad news together

Wow! So fun to hear about everyone’s fantasies. I like Kate in Lost, too, Maria. She’s tough and vulnerable at the same time. I always find myself wanting to give her a hug.
As for Sydney on Alias, yeah, she’s cool, but not my fantasy. There’s something so girl-next-door about her. She can handle herself, no question, but there’s something too “nice” about her that doesn’t call out in my day dreams. Though no one can compete with her and a blue wig….
Now Rose is A Rose and Vicky the Biker, these I do not know. But I have a feeling I need to seek them out!
Ah…Nikita. Yes, she’s up there with the rest. I think the only thing that keeps her from being at the tippy top of my list is the hair. I just have something about blondes…
Which brings me to Selene on Underworld. Loved, loved, loved that storyline. But mostly for the Scott Speedman parts! But Selene is definitely the epitome of my fantasy: tough, a rebel, follows her heart to the death (almost…), a sure bet in a fight, not to mention that catsuit. And I’d LOVE to see you in leather, Trish!
Hey–thanks for the chance to share!

Okay, how about Ziva David on NCIS? Mossad-trained assassin.
Annie Solomon
on May 7th, 2009
@ 7:01 pm:
I love Ziva, but she’s too real to be a fantasy. With training and a complete personality makeover, I could BE Ziva. You could be Ziva. Just not larger than life enough for a fantasy. Not to mention the fact that she hasn’t jumped whats-his-name’s bones yet… LOL
Marie-Nicole Ryan
on May 7th, 2009

Maybe YOU could be Ziva, but I never could. I see her as a female “Michael”, and he was definitely a fantasy. Besides, I would’ve already jumped Tony’s bones a long time ago.

I don’t want any of them to leave. I’m sure people felt the same way about Kate, but I think Ziva is such a unique and real character, even more than Kate. And TONY, I just love that rascal. It’s a wonderful ensemble of characters and I don’t want them to mess with the show.

I would have to say I would want to be Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2….she kick booty and looks fantastic doing it. But right now I’m channeling my inner – Olivia Dunham from Fringe. She is so quiet and smart….but not afraid of anything. There will also be a soft spot in my heart for Zoe from Firefly! Awesome!

Maybe they won’t lose a main character after all. I’ve watched shows where they’ve hinted it might be a main character who will die, but it ends up being someone we’ve only seen once or twice.
I don’t think I have an inner biker chick. Do you think maybe you have to have a driver’s license to have one?
Annie Solomon
on May 7th, 2009
@ 10:07 pm:
Lara, I love Linda Hamilton in T2 as well. She had the buffest arms I’ve ever seen–years before Mrs. O. And, yeah, Olivia Dunham is cool, but too quiet for my taste. In my book, she suffers from the Sydney Bristol flaw: too girl-next-door for fantasy. But I love Fringe, just as I loved Alias.

Chey, I hope you’re right about NCIS. As for your inner biker chick, we all don’t have one, driver’s license or no. LOL Some of us would rather take a nice, warm bath. But your reply makes me wonder who you DO have inside you. An inner Jane Eyre perhaps? A little Elizabeth Bennet (or is she the regency equivalent of a biker chick?)? Come on, ‘fess up…

OK, Pam P, I have to admit: I never watched Angel (ducking for cover now!). No, please–don’t shoot me!!
I don’t know why I never watched it. I like Boreanez (or however you spell his name) but for some reason…maybe I was annoyed that he and Buffy didn’t last? Can’t be, because I LOVED Buffy and Spike (hottest love scene in all of TV ever), so why would I care about Angel? Hmm. This takes deeper analysis. Couch anyone?
Oh, and thanks for getting Sydney’s last name right. Bristol, Bristow. When you get to a certain age (ahem) the details no longer matter.

Okay, I’m late in chiming in, as usual. So I’m sitting here this morning trying to think of who my inner biking chick would be. And I can’t come up with one! How sad is that? I love Kate on Lost, liked Zoe in Firefly, never saw Buffy, Angel, Alias, don’t watch any of the CSI’s, and I’m scared of motorcycles. OMG! Does that make me a wimp? I’ve got to come up with something…
Annie Solomon

Don’t panic, Monica. You may not have an inner biker chick, but I suspect there’s an inner “Jane” (as in me Tarzan, you Jane) lurking somewhere.

Annie – don’t feel bad – I never watched Buffy or Angel… But I did watch Charmed – and all three (or four sisters, depending on what year you tuned into the show) were kick ass biker chicks. Fighting demons on a regular basis… Now isn’t that what life is all about.
When it comes to Sydney Bistrow from Alias – she really was a biker chick, and I think what made her so special is that you didn’t expect her to kick ass and take names and numbers. She had her own unique awesomeness.
Annie Solomon

@ 11:19 am:
Whew, Maria. I was starting to think I was the only one. Though, I never watched Charmed either. Not enough boy booty, I guess! But I am a big Jennifer Garner fan. She just makes me smile. There’s something so warm about her screen presence. I thought she was amazing in 13 Going on 30–or whatever the name of that movie was.
You know–this is interesting. I started the blog out talking about a character in a BOOK, and now we’re all talking about TV and movies. Wonder what that says about book heroines, biker chicks or not. Are they forgettable? Do our romance heroines tend to blend into one another? Gee, I hope not. Or is it just that the visual is so much more powerful? Or makes a bigger cultural splash?

LOL! I do have an inner Jane! Whew! Funny you should mention it. I kinda always had this secret crush on Tarzan. I guess my inner biker chick might be Jane Goodall. Anyone brave enough to hang out with gorillas and face down stinking poachers has some serious attitude. Gotta love those adventurous women!
Maria Lokken

Annie – Heck no – romance heroines from books are unique and definitely stay with me. In fact, they’re better than TV or Film heroines, because I can pretty much imagine what I want them to look like albeit within the confines of what the author has described.
Who can forget Eve Dallas from the In Death Series, or Kat Crawfield from the Night Huntress Series, or Raina Bowen in Driven, Xhex in Lover Avenged or Edie Swann from your very own One Deadly Sin.
There’s a truck load of them. They’re all unique and they have ALL stayed with me. I love me some rough and tumble ready to take on the world romance heroines in my books.

Good, to hear, Maria. I have some favorite heroines, too. Clare Randall of Outlander comes to mind. I also like Eve Dallas. What a f#$ed up mess she is, but she is also one cool chick. I don’t know the Night Huntress Series or Driven and if Lover Revenged is the latest JR Ward I haven’t read it yet. But good to hear it’s not just TV and the movies that draws us in.

Raina Bowen is a good, Maria. There are so many urban fantasy stories now with lots of kicking heroines, like Cat in Jeaniene Frost’s series. I think when it comes to the books, many of us tend to focus on the guys, lol.
Happy Mother’s Day.

I think people end up talking movie media instead of book media because, even in a group of romance readers, it can be more of a common demoninator. As for my inner biker chick, her name is Estelle and I haven’t written her book yet. An inner biker chick sounds like somebody who’s tough all the time instead of somebody who learns to be tough over the course of the book/movie and finally, at the end, she kicks some awful dude in the teabags. That type of thing makes me cheer, though
