Lorelei James’ request for a llama have been denied – and other things you didn’t know.

lorelei-james-photo_sage-studios.JPGWhen Lorelei James is not squirreled away behind her laptop, she can be found reading, practicing yoga, shootin’ her .22, watching the Professional Bull Riders tour on Versus, and running a kid’s taxi service, all in the guise of avoiding housework and rustlin’ up vittles.
Lorelei writes fun, sexy, contemporary erotic romances set in the modern day Wild West.

1) I don’t have a single pet in my household. Crazy, huh? You’d think living in South Dakota I’d have a corral full of horses, a pasture full of cows, a herd of buffalo, a coop full of chickens…but we live inside the city limits in Rapid City (and for some reason, the city council has repeatedly denied my request for a llama). Plenty of wildlife abounds just outside my window. I’ve had deer, turkeys, mountain lions, and foxes in my backyard. On the domestic side, my husband is allergic to cats, we’ve had no luck with dogs, and I do not consider fish, birds, hamsters, gerbils, snakes, or chameleons “pets.” According to my children, we are the only family on the entire planet without a family pet. Funny how fast that claim changes tone if I throw the word “pooper-scooper” into conversation.

rough-raw.jpg2) I write dark, gritty mysteries under my real name, Lori G. Armstrong. The fourth book in the Julie Collins series, entitled Snow Blind, came out in Oct. 2008 in mass market paperback from Medallion Press. I have a new mystery series coming out next year from Simon and Schuster. Some people think it’s odd I have two names, that I’m “hiding” something when I use another name to write erotic romance. I’m not. The decision was strictly for shelving purposes in bookstores and libraries. Some readers will follow me across genre lines from erotic to mystery or vice versa, but most times, they won’t. Whenever readers express interest in my nom de plume, I feel compelled to point out the mysteries are very, very different from the erotic books I write as Lorelei James – and the violence and language in the Lori Armstrong books is not what romance readers expect. I once had a reviewer who’d reviewed both my first books—Dirty Deeds and Blood Ties—tell me I couldn’t possibly be the same person! I’m proud of what I’ve written in both genres. I love delving into the dark aspects of life; murder and mayhem in the mysteries, and then focusing on the best aspects of life; finding true love in the romances. I’ll admit there is a thread of romance in the mysteries, but the main focus is on the character and the plot and her relationship to violence, rather than in the erotic books, where the main focus is on the character’s relationship.

3) I have no plans to write a paranormal story, be it a romance, or a mystery. I love them like crazy, but as paranormal seems to be the one genre I’m not writing these days, when I do get a chance to read, I’ll choose that strictly for fun.

Stay and chat with Lorelei, but first, go and read a bit about Lorelei’s book Rough, Raw, and Ready  – it’s the 5th book in her wonderful Rough Riders Series, come back and answer the question – Where is Edgard Mancuso from? and you’ll be eligible to win the book.

Hi Lorelei! Welcome to RNTV! I’ve heard nothing but AMAZING things about your Rough Riders series. What inspires you about the Wild West? Is it the cowboys? Because God knows, they inspire me!

Kati – hey, thanks for popping in – it’s good to be here today.

I live in the Wild West so naturally I want to write about it and show the world the beauty…and oftentimes, the ugliness of this place I call home with as much accuracy as possible. Ranching is glamorized but in reality it is a brutally hard life to choose. If a ranch has been in a family for generations, lots of times the descendants don’t have a choice but to carry on the ranching tradition. That dichotomy intrigues me.

As far as cowboys…no need to explain, really :) I’m a rodeo junkie, I adore cowboys in any form professional or cowhands. I love western novels, but some of the modern day tales left me wanting more, especially wanting to know more about how ungentlemanly a cowboy can behave behind closed bedroom (or barn) doors. Which is why my books are different – they are erotic contemporary western romances – the steamy sex always leads to a happily ever after. And a quick plug for Samhain, who took a chance on my first book in this series, Long Hard Ride, when the subject matter was a little out of the box.

    Hello sexy LJ,

First of all…have to say that I looooove your photo posted up there. Absolutely faboo! You’re a doll.

Secondly, don’t you just love those professional bull riders? I laughed when I read that because the second book I ever wrote was based on having just stumbled across a PBR event on television one Sunday afternoon. That book is yet to be published but it did final in a competition so I may still pursue it. Just loved that we had that in common. There is definately something about those fellas….fearless…maybe?

I checked out your book on the website and read the excerpt. To answer the trivia question…Edgard is from Brazil but my favorite part is a woman who knows how to handle a pitchfork! LOL

    Hi Lorelei –

I’m so totally with you on ‘pets’. As a child we didn’t have any – as an adult – well, let’s just say there’s enough for me to take care of without the dreaded pooper scooper being an object in my household.

By the way – tomorrow we’ll be putting up a video where Angela James talks about you! I loved what she said, and yes this is a tease – but I’ve been known to be a tease before. I’ll just say – for those of you who haven’t yet read Lorelei’s books — what Angela says makes you want to move your fingers quickly over to Samhain and press the ‘buy’ button.

Well, Marisa, switching gears is part of the reason I write both romance and mystery. Once I finish a mystery, I want to write a romance where I know everything was going to turn out good in the end. In mystery, especially writing a darker series with a recurring character, even though there is resolution at the end of each book, there’s the lingering effects of the violence that builds from book to book. Getting out of that place would be harder for me if I didn’t have an outlet, erotic romance, to cleanse my palate. And who doesn’t like to write about sex with hot men? Be they cowboys, Indians, bikers…

I did write an erotic suspense, Running With the Devil, and it was a challenge to mix both my styles…

Hi Lorelei. I believe I won your first Rough Riders book at your site and enjoyed it quite a bit. I admit that I’m still dipping my toes in the ebook world, but yours are definitely worth adding to my list. I love the continuation of the same story, so we can see characters develop and deal with life and love and the day-to-day stuff we all handle, but seems way more interesting when it’s a character in a book.

How many books are planned in your Rough Riders series? Any other stories (as Lorelei) scheduled for the near future?

Thanks K, for commenting on my brand spankin’ new author photo debuting on this site today :)

I love the PBR. The closest it gets to us here is Billings MT and I’ve gone once. I try to hit as many rodeos as I can, right now the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo is in town, we went to Xtreme Bullriding Friday night, which is always a blast. The PRCA is Saturday night and we’re headed to that too.

And there is just…something sexy about a man crazy and confident enough to get on the back of a 1500 pound animal. Good luck with your bull rider book!

LOL Lorelei, I am so not a pet person. Never have been, never will be. I can take other people’s pets in small doses when I visit their homes but having one of my own, well that is just not going to happen. Keeping up with a 2 year old is hard enough thank you very much.

To answer your question, because I would love to be considered for this book, Edgard is from Brazil.

  18. Lorelei James
    on Feb 4th, 2009
    @ 11:38 am

Stacy – the Rough Rider series really are a modern-day western saga…I can tell the story of a family over the course of many books and many years in my fictional world.

I’ll keep writing them as long as my editor is happy with what I’m doing :) The next book is Branded As Trouble, and that’s out next month, after that, Strong, Silent Type is out in May, which is a Rough Riders novella and is also part of Samhain’s cowboy anthology, and in July, Miss Firecracker, the second novella in my Wild West Boys series, a sort of spin off from the Rough Riders series.

Waving at Barb, another James Gang member!

Thanks, Mariana – I always love to hear readers are liking the books~

Lily, I hope you give the books a try, they’re all available as kindle titles (as a matter of fact, Long Hard Ride was the #1 kindle title of ALL books two weeks ago – woot!), with the exception of Rough Raw and Ready…and Samhain is working on correcting that oversight as we speak.
