rntv-button.jpg2008 was an amazing year for romance. Those of us who review for RNTV have been blessed with the opportunity to read and review romance from both established authors and those making their romance debut. We’ve worked throughout this year to share our thoughts about the books we’ve read and hopefully have helped some of you find some new and terrific books to add to your collection. As the year draws to a close, we decided that we’d like to recognize some of the books that have moved us.

What we’ve done is each reviewer for RNTV has chosen their favorite books from a variety of categories and have chosen what we believe is the book of the year. We ask you, our readers to help us, by chiming in with votes for the books we’ve listed here. And on December 29th, we’ll award the RNTV Reviewer’s Choice to each genre and to Book of the Year, as selected by the reviewers and our readers. The voting will be open until Sunday December 28th. So, without further ado, here are our choices:
**Please note that if you notice that a reviewer’s name isn’t listed in a category it is because they did not make a selection in that category.

Reviewers Tell You Why

Historical Romance

Andrea: The Bride Price by Anne Mallory – The Bride Price features an intelligent, mature heroine, a true rake of a hero coming together in a compelling story.  I read this book within two days and since I’m a slow reader, that’s usually a good sign that I loved it!

Buffie: Master of Surrender by Karin Tabke – A medieval in the truest sense of the word.  I loved the gritty feel to the novel and was intrigued by the group of warriors know as the Brotherhood of the Blood Sword.

Gannon: To Sin With A Stranger by Kathryn Caskie – This is the start of a fantastic new series.  Sterling is a hero whose sin is greed, but deep down he has a loving and generous heart.  It’s the heroine, Isobel, who makes him long to be a better man.  Wonderful characters and some truly erotic love scenes!

Kate: The Spymaster’s Lady by Joanna Bourne – Joanna’s writing and characters are rich in their actions and telling.

Kati: Broken Wing by Judith James – The book is lush and descriptive, has an unusual setting and a wonderfully tortured hero and a strong willed, decisive heroine.

Maria: Duchess by Night by Eloisa James – Because this is terrific story-telling, great dialogue puts an unusual twist on a mistaken identity plot.  Eloisa James delves into what society thinks is right and proper and what happens when you go beyond those boundaries.  It’s a clever, very well written romance.

Marisa: The Spymaster’s Lady by Joanna Bourne – The book is an historical romance that is wrapped inside layers and layers of skillfully written dialog and unique characters. An exquisitely written adventure that slowly and masterfully unveils plot and character twists with a deft and agile pen.

PJ: The Edge of Desire by Stephanie Laurens – A beautifully written, sensual story of second chances, The Edge of Desire has all the critical elements that kept me turning pages late into the night and two lead characters that I fell in love with, agonized with, cheered for, and celebrated with tears of happiness.

Stacey: Rogue and the Rival by Maya Rodale – Transcendent.  I loved this book.  This is the book you put in to people’s hands who say that romance is meaningless.

Stacy: Seduce Me At Sunrise by Lisa Kleypas  – I chose Seduce Me at Sunrise because it was such an emotionally-charged story that stayed with me long after I read it.  Kev loved Win so much, and it was a feeling that scared him beyond anything else because he truly believed he didn’t deserve her.  Instead of accepting Kev’s decision, Win chose to fight for him, and prove that they belonged together instead of apart.  It was just such a beautiful love story. (Honorable mentions to Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran, Broken Wing by Judith James & Like No Other Lover by Julie Anne Long)

Contemporary Romance

Andrea: Blue-Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas – Beautiful story of two people learning to trust one another.  Blue-Eyed Devil contains some sensitive subjects and Ms. Kleypas’s handling of them was both masterful and emotionally satisfying.

Buffie:  Tie: A Little Less Talk and A Lot More Action by LuAnn McLane and Just the Sexiest Man by Julie James –A Little Less Talk and A Lot More Action is a wonderful sexy Southern romance that had me laughing the entire time.  A fabulous story about the hunky hometown hero and the girl who has loved him from a far for many years. Just the Sexiest Man Alive by Julie James.   This book made me laugh out loud and enjoy the game of chase between attorney Taylor Donovan and three time Sexiest Man Alive actor/star Jason Andrews.

Gannon: Blue-Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas – Ms. Kleypas tackles the painful subject of domestic violence in this stellar contemporary and handles it with sensitivity.  Hardy Cates is one hot hero and is just the man to make Haven realize that she is a woman to be loved and cherished.  Filled with Kleypas’ trademark sensuality, this book is a keeper!

Kate: Blue Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas because of the heroine’s ability to overcome the odds. An emotional read that will have you in tears.

Kati: Blue Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas. Blue Eyed Devil is not just my top contemporary, but my favorite read of the year. I’ve never seen an author make such a seamless transition from historical to contemporary. The story also tackles an incredibly tough topic (spousal abuse) in a realistic, believable way

Maria: Taking the Heat by Kathryn Shay – Because it has so many wonderful characters and it’s a ‘feel good’ read.  While the relationship that develops between the main characters is at the heart of the story, the author creates relationships between the entire family that will give the reader a warm, fuzzy, glowing feeling.

Marisa: Flat-Out Sexy by Erin McCarthy – A relationship driven romance with humor and fun, characters that are charming and a second chance at love. Oh and did I mention – flat out sexy.

PJ: Blue-Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas –  An exquisitely written, emotional journey of betrayal, abuse and triumph of the spirit intertwined with a sizzling love story of two people who have more than earned their happy ever after, this book engaged all of my emotions and kept my attention riveted to the pages from beginning to end.

Stacey: Sweet Talk, Susan Mallery – This was a toughie in a year filled with amazing contemporaries.  But it was Claire, the fabulous, brilliant, guileless heroine that made this book my top pick.  (If you want to know, Kathleen O’Reilly’s Sex Straight Up is a Close second.)

Stacy: Blue-Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas.  This story gets my pick for best contemporary because Ms. Kleypas took a horrible situation that the heroine was going through and made her a strong character, one that was brave enough to save herself, and find love again.  It was painful, yes, but poignantly so, and the end result was immensely satisfying.  It just proves that Ms. Kleypas is considerably talented writing in any genre.

Paranormal Romance:

Andrea: When Twilight Burns by Colleen Gleason – Two words: Chapter twenty-two!  The best fight scene ever.  Victoria finally chooses between the brooding, angst-filled Max and the charming rake, Sebastian … and my choice won!

Buffie:  Hostage to Pleasure by Nalini Singh – Nalini creates a wonderful world in her Psy/Changeling series. I loved watching Psy Ashaya experience touch and emotion as introduced by Changeling Dorian.

Gannon: When Twilight Burns by Colleen Gleason – I have been hooked on this series from the first book and have been riveted by Victoria’s trials and tribulations as she finds her way as the leader of the Gardellas.  She’s had the attention of two very intriguing, attractive men and she finally decides who will win her heart.  And it’s the man I was rooting for!

Kate: Dark Needs on Night’s Edge by Kresley Cole – Well written romance between a virgin vampire and a ghost. They make it work!

Kati: Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione. Strong heroine, unusual mythology and incendiary love scenes kick off a fascinating and page turning paranormal romance. (Honorable mention: When Twilight Burns by Colleen Gleason – for a variety of reasons, but mostly because my Team won.)

Maria: Lover Enshrined by J.R. Ward – Because she took the series to the next level.  Because she changed the rules.  Because she created a hero with many flaws and I still cared about him.  Because the world she created continually evolves and I want to know more.

Marisa: Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione – One surprise after another with a unique mythology that made me sit up and take notice. Edgy, dark and sexy with characters that drew me in and kept me turning the pages.

PJ: Into the Flame by Christina Dodd  – A thrilling, sizzling, non-stop, emotionally packed conclusion to Dodd’s terrific Darkness Chosen series, Into the Flame was everything I had hoped for and more.

Stacey: Demon Night by Meljean Brook – This was a very tough year, tons of brilliant books, but it was Drifter and Charlie who stayed in my head and made this third book in Meljean’s series my favorite of the year. (Richelle Mead’s Storm Born and Nalini Singh’s Hostage to Pleasure should get honorable mentions.)

Stacy: When Twilight Burns by Colleen Gleason –  Here’s where we get a sense of what Victoria truly wants, and it’s both exhilarating and heartbreaking to see her choose between two amazing men.  Also, I feel Victoria is one of the strongest heroines, yet she’s ultimately human, and tends to make mistakes as we all do.  She’s not invincible, and I believe this is what makes it easier to relate to her as a woman.

Urban Fantasy

Andrea: Before I Wake by Kathryn Smith – This one is my favorite book of the year, so of course it’s my favorite in its category.  Take one quirky, down-to-earth heroine living a double life, add one uptight, tortured hero with his share of secrets, put them in an engaging, comprehensive world, and you have a recipe for one amazing book!

Gannon: One Foot In the Grave by Jeaniene Frost – This is a compelling urban fantasy series with a kick-ass heroine, Cat.  A half-vampire, she hunts the rogue undead and uses all of the skills she learned from her vampire lover, Bones.  Bones is one sexy vampire and Cat is an excellent match for him.  I can’t wait to see where Ms. Frost takes this series.

Kate: One Foot in the Grave by Jeaniene Frost – Fast paced, action packed vampire story with one of the hottest sex scenes I have read this year.

Kati: Iron Kissed by Patricia Briggs – The third in the Mercy Thompson series, the book sinks us deeper into Mercy’s life and finally answers the question, Adam or Sam. And well, it answered it the way I wanted. (Honorable mention to Grimspace by Ann Aguirre, which blew me out of the water with it’s strong heroine, and well, March, the hero is divine.)

Marisa: Tie. One Foot In the Grave by Jeaniene Frost and Before I Wake by Kathryn Smith – One Foot in the Grave is action packed with a rich mythology and fueled by the energy of the two main characters that continually surprise me. Their struggle to save the world and each other is a ride I’m going to continue to enjoy in 2009. Before I Wake – a contemporary from the voice of an historical author rich in descriptive passages of modern day New York and a dream world filled with nightmares.  Relatable dialoge, descriptive passages and a hero and a heroine that have more questions then there are answers.

Stacey: Night Life by Caitlin Kitteredge– I put this one in Urban Fantasy but this book and its sequel hit me on all levels – thriller, the worldbuilding and  romance.. (Honorable mentions: Magic Burns, Ilona Andrews and Lisa Shearin’s Armed and Magical (though urban does not describe Lisa Shearin’s setting…)  & SFR Top Pick: Linnea Sinclair, Shades of Dark And yes.  SFR does need a category, with Grimspace a close second)

Stacy: Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs – I’m not a huge reader of urban fantasy, but I loved the mythology behind the Alpha/Omega existence.  Anna is a woman who has no clue as to her strength, what she’s truly capable of as an Omega, and Charles is just the man to bring it to her attention and worship her in the way she deserves.  He doesn’t coddle her, though he does protect her, but sees her as being his equal and takes pride in her abilities instead of being intimidated by them.

Romantic Suspense

Buffie: Trial by Fire by Jo Davis.   A creepy murderer, arson, and incredibly sexy firemen.   Do I need to say more?

Gannon: Trial by Fire by Jo Davis – Holy smokes!  I’m absolutely in love with Howard and the rest of the firefighters of Station 5.  Howard and Kat practically set the pages on fire.  A big, tough guy like Howard, who’s emotionally wounded and vulnerable, is my kind of hero.  Ms. Davis has one hot series on her hands and I am hooked!

Kate: Sweetheart by Chelsea Cain. About a serial killer and the detective she tortured and loves. A disturbing love story

Kati: Death Angel by Linda Howard – Vintage Howard, the book features a heroine who is on the run, the hero hired to kill her and some incredibly chemistry. (Honorable mention: Trial by Fire by Jo Davis)

Maria: Pitch Black by Susan Crandall – Because I didn’t see it coming.  Because the hero has gentility yet strength that leaps off the page.  Because the mystery isn’t solved until the end.

Marisa: All Through the Night by Suzanne Brockmann. I waited a long time for Jules and Robin’s story – I wasn’t disappointed. Taught suspense, a given in any Brockmann book – but also a satisfying ending (or beginning) to a love story that has traveled through many books in the Troublesooter Series.

PJ: Trial by Fire by Jo Davis –  The mystery is tightly woven with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat, the hero’s background is fraught with emotional trauma that broke my heart and the love story is so sizzling hot that it almost set the pages on fire.  The minute I finished the last page I started counting the days until the next book in this series will be released.

Stacey: Show No Mercy, Cindy Gerard/Loose and Easy, Tara Janzen – This was a toughie.  But in the end, these two stood out.  Janzen and Gerard came up big this year, not to mention the major revelation in Janzen’s book. (Honorable mention: Roxanne St Claire came up close behind.)

Stacy: Death Angel by Linda Howard – A different kind of a love story, but one very potent and unforgettable.  The hero and heroine don’t start out very likeable, but as we get to explore their pasts and the paths they’ve chosen, we begin to understand them, and I think sometimes the best love stories are the ones that leave you feeling a little uncomfortable because they are not black and white, but full of shades of gray.

Erotic Romance/Erotica

Andrea: My Prerogative by Sasha White – This one is extremely sexy with multi-layered characters and contains one of my all-time favorite passages in a book: “… she looked like an angel with a bruised soul.  It called to him, that bruised part of her.  So much more than her beauty.”  How can you resist that?

Gannon: Flat-Out Sexy by Erin McCarthy – Take a widowed mother, a younger man and put them together and the sparks fly.  A charming story with sizzling sex, Ms. McCarthy has a winner on her hands.  And there are more to come!

Kati: Wicked Burn by Beth Kery. Emotional, taut, and deeply connecting, this book is a romance that happens to have incendiary sex. An immensely likeable, troubled heroine, and a super alpha, decisive hero make this my favorite erotic romance of the year. (Honorable mention: Be With Me by Maya Banks. One heroine, three heroes and a terrific mystery that advances the story in a believable way. And the sex?? Smokin’ HAWT!)

Marisa: Wicked Burn by Beth Kery – Emotion. Love. Depth. Courage.  Discovery. Boundaries. Wicked Burn has it all. A contemporary erotic romance that has an emotionally charged plot that will tug at your heart strings. With two main characters that are three dimensional and layered with subtext it seamlessly blends romance, steamy erotic interludes and potent character development.

Stacey: Forbidden Fruit by Eden Bradley – This one took me by surprise.  I usually don’t like the more erotic romances, but I loved these characters and this story.

Stacy: Wicked Burn by Beth Kery – I love erotic romance, and read a lot of it, but it’s been a long time since I’ve read such a sexy book that was so incredibly emotional at the same time.  The characters initially communicate physically, both feeling a strong sexual connection between them that neither can walk away from.  This connection becomes stronger as they let their bodies do the talking, and it totally worked within the context of this particular story.  Bold and evocative, “Wicked Burn” brings two lost souls together in the most basic, primitive way, one that leads them to a powerful and empowering love. (Honorable mention: “Flat-Out Sexy” by Erin McCarthy).

Debut Novel

Andrea: Marked by Moonlight by Sharie Kohler – This was my first werewolf/lycan book and introduced me to a whole new level of paranormal.  It’s sexy, it’s action-packed and it’s terrific.

Buffie: Tie: Her One Desire by Kimberly Killion and The Bride Hunt Ball by Olivia Parker.   Her One Desire: This is one dynamic debut book.  A medieval with unusual characters – Lizbeth, the daughter of the Executioner for the King of England, and Broderick, Laird of Clan Maxwell and prisoner of the King of England.  The Bride Hunt Ball by Olivia Parker.    As a total fan of reality television, I thoroughly enjoyed the premise of this book — reality television meets the 1800s.

Gannon: The Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran – When Ann Aguirre raved about this novel, I had to read it.  And I was not disappointed.  Emmaline is a heroine whose life is steeped in loss, and Julian is a man who no longer knows where he belongs.  They find love in the face of tragedy and war, and they nearly lose it completely.  The writing is so lush and beautiful; it’s a book that will move you to tears.  A fantastic debut!

Kate: Grimspace by Ann Aguirre – Ann is one of the reasons I read sci-fi. She grabs you by the throat with her characters and story.

Kati: Trial by Fire by Jo Davis – All hail the Firefighters of Station 5. An experienced hero, a plus sized, adventurous heroine and a mystery that actually hooked me. I finished the book and immediately turned it over and read it again.

Marisa: Broken Wing by Judith James – A sumptuous feast! Tortured and complex hero with miles to go before he can rest; his story is compelling and captivating. Couple that with a heroine that is strong and devoted and you have a combination that will draw you in and NOT let you go.

Maria: The Spymaster’s Lady by Joanna Bourne – Because it was totally unexpected.  Because I didn’t see it coming.  Because the heroine is strong and brave.  Because it’s a delicious love story.

PJ: The Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran – This exquisitely written, sweeping historical saga set during the rebellion in India during the 1800’s and, later, in England is a richly written and wonderfully descriptive story of a woman cast adrift in a foreign country during treacherous times and a man who straddles two worlds, not fully belonging to either.  The Duke of Shadows is a compelling, heart-wrenching, emotional journey that is not to be missed.

Stacey: Dark Nest by Leanna Renee Hieber – Brilliant, imaginative and indicative of amazing things to come from this writer.  I cannot wait to see what she does next.

Stacy: Just the Sexiest Man Alive by Julie James – Snappy, sexy, fun and interesting, I was amazed that this was the author’s first novel.  I kept flipping the pages, wanting more and more.  I loved how strong and smart the heroine was, how she put the arrogant hero in his place.  I loved seeing the change in them both, and how they genuinely liked each other and got to know each other before falling in love.  It made it all the sweeter when it finally did happen.  Ms. James is an author to watch.

Book of the Year

Andrea: Before I Wake by Kathryn Smith – See gushing report above. 🙂

Buffie: Tie: The Spymaster’s Lady by JoAnne Bourne and Blue Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas.  The Spymaster’s Lady is one masterpiece of writing.  I felt transported back to old England and France and found myself in the midst of a spy ring.   Utterly fascinating. I loved the heroine’s from Blue Eyed Devil journey from domestic violence to a love so fierce and safe it makes you cry.

Gannon: Spymaster’s Lady by Joanna Bourne– What can I say about this book?  Truly, one of the best books I have ever read, The Spymaster’s Lady is incredibly detailed and magnificently written.  Ms. Bourne’s use of language is unparalleled.  I could actually “hear” Annique’s French accent and the cadence of her speech.  Full of twists and surprises–one that absolutely shocked me–this book had me spellbound.  Once I finished it, I couldn’t read another book for more than a week.  I just wanted to savor the brilliance of this special novel.

Kate: Tie: The Host by Stephanie Meyer and Blue Eyed-Devil by Lisa Kleypas

Kati: Blue Eyed-Devil by Lisa Kleypas.

Maria: Lover Enshrined by J.R. Ward.

Marisa: Lover Enshrined by J.R. Ward  – Angst, love, addiction, romance, action and redemption. Lover Enshrined encompasses a range of emotions that doesn’t follow a formula but instead reaches beyond conventions to tell the story of a community in the throws of change. Exciting? Yes. Romantic? Check. Engaging? You bet. All that and more.

PJ: The Spymaster’s Lady by Joanna Bourne

Stacy: Tie: Seduce Me at Sunrise by Lisa Kleypas and Trial by Fire by Jo Davis. This is a tie because I believe both of these books are grand in their own right.  Seduce Me at Sunrise because of the incredible love story between two people who were destined to be together, even if one of them couldn’t see it that way.  Trial by Fire because of, well, Howard.  Here was a gorgeous, capable hero who couldn’t see why he was so special, and the heroine who made him realize that despite all he’d suffered, he could be happy, that he deserved it, and she wanted to be the woman who convinced him of that.  Howard was also amazing because he loved Kat just as she was, and didn’t want her to change.  Kat was not the perfect, thin, biddable woman, and she was completely comfortable in her own skin.  She was a very empowering heroine, and one I would like to see more of in the books I read.

Now it’s your turn. Help us by voting on which of the romances we’ve chosen should win awards for Historical Romance, Contemporary Romance, Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy, Romantic Suspense, Erotic Romance/Erotica, Debut Novel and Book of the Year.

Happy Holidays! Kati Dancy

I would have to say J.R. Ward for Lover Enshrined, but I also loved Christina Dodd’s Into the flame. I am sooo glad I don’t have to make this decsion. I love both authors. How can one be better than the other? They both bring a different style to the paranomal genre. Good luck to all the authors!

My Best Book of 2008 was accidentally left off the list. It’s The Spymaster’s Lady by Joanna Bourne.

The Spymaster’s Lady – A brilliantly written, historically rich story of romance, adventure and political intrigue set in France and England in the early 1800’s, The Spymaster’s Lady is, quite simply, one of the best books of any genre that I have read in many years.

Every book i have read by LuAnn McLane has been nothing but pure laughter, fun, and everything a reader is looking for. From Dark Roots and Cowboy Boots right down to A Little Less Talk and a Lot More Action. Yes, you will love her Alpa Males and her Bossy Ladys. So i would say grab your coffee and one of her books, set back and enjoy. My vote for LuAnn McLane is TOP CHOICE… Glenna Gibbs

WOW! Merry Christmas to me!!! Thank you, thank you, every at RNTV, but I have to extend my biggest (((CYBER HUG))) to Buffie for nominating HER ONE DESIRE for Best Debut Novel of 2008. Erotic Romance/Erotica – My Prerogative by Sasha White

I’m afraid the reviewers missed two terrific books. I think the reviewers should have nominated Private Arrangement by Sherry Thomas for Best Debut and The Last Duke of Wyndham by Julia Quinn for Best Historical. The Spymaster’s Lady was definitely good, but I suppose we’re only allowed one vote per category.

Historical – Seduce Me at Sunrise by Lisa Kleypas

Contemporary – Blue-Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas

Paranormal – Lover Enshrined by JR Ward

A caveat to my votes: I haven’t read ALL of the entries in each category. *takes a deep breath*

Historical Romance: Seduce Me At Sunrise by Lisa Kleypas (I have heard some amazing things about Broken Wing, but I didn’t feel it was fair to vote for it if I haven’t read it…YET [because I so can’t wait to read it!] Plus, I loved Seduce Me At Sunrise 🙂 )

Contemporary Romance: Blue-Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas

Paranormal Romance: Hostage to Pleasure by Nalini Singh

Urban Fantasy: Iron Kissed by Patricia Briggs (I dithered and dithered over this….Iron Kissed or Cry Wolf. Cruel people to make me make such a hard decision. In the end, it came down to that amazing scene near the end of Iron Kissed with Mercy and Ben. Although, I just LOVE Anna & Charles!)

Book of the Year: Blue Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas (because this book, for me, made such a difference to the way I see myself)

I highly recommend “Just the Sexiest Man Alive” by Julie James and agree with Buffie’s and Stacy’s assessment of this very pleasurable novel. I did not want to put it down until I had read it cover to cover, and then read it again. Julie James is artful in the way that she developed Taylor’s and Jason’s characters and relationship. While Taylor is sassy, witty and thoughtful, Jason is arrogant and charming. From fighting, to flirting, to fighting again, and then to loving one another, I truly hoped and was very pleased that the two ended up together in a meaningful relationhsip. I cannot wait to reading the next novel by Julie James!

Debut Novel–Tie between Spymaster’s Lady and The Duke in Shadows, both of w hich have wonderful characters and powerful writing

I loved Master of Surrender by Karin Tabke. The past few years publishers have run lean on good medievals – not anymore! Master of Surrender felt true to the times and true to romance (a tough balancing act in a harsh era). Karin Tabke’s characters, her writing, takes you to another place and time, and you want to stay there. Master of Surrender made it to my small “keeper shelf.”

You can’t help but love Taylor Donovan, the heroine. She’s smart, sexy, driven, and endearingly sassy. And the author lets you see just enough quirkiness and vulnerability of the arrogant mega-star, Jason Andrews, the hero, to allow you to experience, with less intensity, what Taylor ultimately experiences: most often, you want to wring Jason’s neck, but in the end, you love the heck out of him, too!

The author’s website says the book was originally written as a screenplay. With a fast-moving plot line, many memorable “scenes,” witty banter between the lead characters, and great character development, the reader can easily see how this fun book would translate into a purely enjoyable romantic comedy.

Light, fun reading with substance. Really, you can’t ask for more out of a romance novel.

Paranormal Romance: Lover Enshrined. Really, Ms. Ward amazes me with her ability to weave worlds that are engrossing and absolutely believable. A mark of a truly great book is its ability to make you feel a wide range of emotion. These books are not only sexy and heart-felt but at times scary and uncomfortable. Historical Romance – Master of Surrender by Karin Tabke
Super sexy! So NOT a wallpaper historical. This is an author who knows how to write MEN.

Contemporary Romance – Sweet Talk by Susan Mallery
Susan Mallery doesn’t need a suspense plot to keep her stories moving. Between the bakery, the sisters and the romance, I couldn’t stop turning the pages.

    Paranormal Romance –
None of these, for me. I’m doing a write-in for Iiona-Somebody’s Magic Burns and Magic Bites.

Historical Romance- The Edge of Desire by Stephanie Laurens
Laurens always writes such amazing historicals, this one is wonderful. She is one of the few I still read regularly.

    Contemporary Romance
Sadly, I didn’t read anything in this category that made the cut.

Paranormal Romance- Hostage to Pleasure by Nalini Singh
This series just keeps getting better and better and still staying fresh and not repetitive. This is probably my current favorite in the series, which is one of my top paranormal romance series.

Urban Fantasy- Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs
The characters really pull you in and the werewolf world-building that Briggs has done is so seamless, and the concept of the Omega wolf is unique to all the paranormals/urban fantasies I’ve read.

Romantic Suspense- Death Angel by Linda Howard
This is a crazy book to be a romantic suspense, but I think Howard’s risk-taking with the genre should be recognized. Neither character is all that sympathetic and the opening of the book is about as far from a typical romance as you can get, as but she makes it work, grim tone and all and the HEA is believable for these characters.

    Erotic Romance/Erotica
Didn’t read anything in this category that made the cut.

    Debut Novel
Didn’t read anything in this category that made the cut.

Book of the Year- The Host by Stephanie Meyer
I adore this book! I hadn’t read any of the Twilight books when I read it, but picked it up because I wondered how a “love triangle” between a human, a host and the host’s alien would work. Well, Meyer’s makes it work. It’s one of the most unique and amazing books I’ve read in a long time, not just this year. It was the book I probably recommended the most to all my friends (and even strangers, when given the opportunity). I just love all the nuances in the book and how things develop and change with the characters. It really gripped me and made me laugh and cry and smile while reading it. I can’t recommend it enough.

I am currently reading through the reviewers’ reasons and this comment caught my eye:

Andrea: When Twilight Burns by Colleen Gleason – Two words: Chapter twenty-two! The best fight scene ever. Victoria finally chooses between the brooding, angst-filled Max and the charming rake, Sebastian … and my choice won!

I’m currently reading When Twilight Burns…when I’m not writing what feels like endless Christmas cards (yes I’m behind) and now all I want to do is read Chapter 22! Except I’m only up to Chapter 11 and I have at least 25 more cards to do! AAARRGGHHH! I don’t know if it will help to have my Team Sebastian pom poms at the ready, but they are 🙂

    I vote for:
HISTORICAL: Broken Wing by Judith James
CONTEMPORARY: Blue-Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas
PARANORMAL: Hostage To Pleasure by Nalini Singh
URBAN FANTASY: Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs
DEBUT: It’s a tie for me – The Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran and Broken Wing by Judith James.
BOOK OF THE YEAR: Seduce Me At Sunrise by Lisa Kleypas

No offense to Ms. Kleypas (because Seduce Me At Sunrise was an excellent book, IMHO), but my last vote would have been for either Broken Wing or The Duke Of Shadows should they have been in the Book Of The Year choices.

True confessions, I am Maya’s mom — but also an avid historical romance reader. And while I adored Duchess By Night (I’m a sucker for girls dressing up as guys) I am going to vote for the Rogue and the Rival… It’s a great book, a great read with lots of laughs and good twists. It’s hard making someone as awful as Philip into a hero but Maya did it!
