Halloween is almost here and we’re counting down. This is day 10 of our 13 days of Halloween and Caridad Pineiro, author of the fabulous paranormal series The Calling, as well as the South Beach Chicas books is with us today to tell us what things bump her night.
RNTV: Is Halloween for kids or can adults join in on the fun? How will you be celebrating it this year?
Caridad: Adults can definitely join in the fun on Halloween. When my daughter was younger, we would dress up to take her trick or treating and also for her school Halloween Hop. Both parents and kids had a blast becoming someone different for the day. One time I went as Scully from The X-Files. I wore one of my business suits with a red wig, but the highlight of the outfit was the alien baby my daughter and I made. We found a bright green alien candle, stuffed it into a big plastic jar (like the kind that’s filled with pretzels). We then decided orange would be a good color for the goo in the jar and made enough Jello to fill it. I carried it around all night at the hop, but it was way heavy! My arms ached all the next day.
This year I’ll be celebrating Halloween by talking about vampires at the Bound Brook library a few days before and then by anxiously waiting at the door to hand out goodies to all the neighborhood kids that come by.
RNTV: Your terrific series, The Calling, has some very hot heroes/vampires. How do you think they celebrate Halloween?
Caridad: THE CALLING does have some very hot and interesting heroes, both alive and undead. I can so picture them heading out for a quick bite on special someone or a fun costume party at one of their clubs, like The Lair or The Blood Bank. As for Diana and Ryder, they might choose to a very special night together and who knows what might happen nine months from now! One of the fun things about crafting THE CALLING world is being able to expand the mythology with new vampire possibilities as well as adding new and interesting characters. In HONOR CALLS and FURY CALLS (Febuary and March 2009), readers will get to meet a young dhampir and a Chinese vampire and I’m really excited about how both stories turned out.
RNTV: Caridad, what’s your favorite “sitting in the dark on a stormy night” Halloween story?
Caridad: My favorite “sitting in the dark on a stormy night” scary story has to be The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe. Whenever I read this short story, I imagine what it must be like to be going quietly and silently mad while that wild pulsing heart – that accusing heart – beats louder and louder and louder. It’s a great scary read because the horror is about something very real.
RNTV: What are your top 3 reasons we should all go out and trick or treat this year?
Caridad: 1. Chocolate. 2. Chocolate. 3. Chocolate. LOL! Actually, besides those three reasons, it’s always good to give yourself a little bit of down time and have fun. I also find that for me, it’s great to explore the inner kid that enjoys dressing up as Scully or a Vampire Slayer. I think it’s vital to see through a child’s eyes and rekindle the wonder of life that we sometimes lose due to the responsibilities of work and being an adult.
RNTV: It’s a stormy night and all the lights have just gone out. There’s a knock on your door. You open it and are greeted by a vampire. Are you inviting him for research purposes or are you inviting him in for a late night feast?
Caridad: There’s definitely something very sexy about vampires, so I would definitely say that research alone would not be my first thought for what to do with a vampire on a dark and stormy night. After we’d had a bit of fun, I’d take the time to ask them whether or not they liked being adored by so many and whether that kind of celebrity had put a crimp in their midnight outings.
RNTV: You’re out trick or treating and you get bag after bag of candy corn; what do you do? (I’m asking all the authors this question, it’s not a trick question, it’s a biased question. You see, I don’t think Candy Corn should be classified as a candy or a treat – in my opinion it’s more like a punishment). What is your favorite Halloween candy?
Caridad: Candy Corn is definitely not a treat , so I’m with you on that bias. As for favorite – either Butterfingers or Heath bars and after that, anything chocolate.
Today’s contest is part of the blog. So all you have to do is stop by the home page and view part one of our new video interview with Caridad. The question is – Who is Blake?
Just let us know and 5 random correct answers will win Caridad’s new novella Desire Calls. Now since we are in a giving mood – 2 of the 5 will also receive a second book – a single title that will be chosen by Maria.
Caridad will be here today to chat with us. In the meantime, I’m wondering do you still go trick or treating – or do you leave it to the kids?

MMM love that cover! And I think the video interview was great, I think I just found another series to start
**To answer the question, Blake is a sexy, British, punk vampire who is funny and is an Anti-Hero.**
I haven’t gone trick or treating for quite some time, but man my childhood memories of it could never be topped.
I gotta say I love this blog, I’m always finding new titles and new authors to read!!

Hi Caridad! So glad you could be with us today. It was so much fun seeing you at the NJ RWA conference on Saturday. I can’t believe your favorite scary story is The Tell Tale Heart. When I was very young a teacher read it to us in class during Halloween and it scared the bejezus out of me. I didn’t sleep for a week. I really can’t read that story any more, it still scares me. The images are so vivid.
As for Trick or Treating. I haven’t been in years – but give me a good party and I’m there. Last year I went to a costume party and dressed up as html code – oh yes. It took a while for people to figure out what the heck I was. I think this year I’ll go to the party as Maria and be done with it.

Good Morning Caridad! Ahhh, The Tell Tale Heart. I remember it well…too well! I read it in school and, like Marisa, it scared me spitless! Very good choice.
I don’t trick-or-treat but I do dress up to greet the trick-or-treaters who come to my house. I always turn my inner child loose on Halloween. It’s my second-favorite holiday!

Hi, Caridad! We’re glad you could be here with us today. I remember reading The Tell Tale Heart in school, too. Very creepy!
Hooray! Another chocolate candy lover, who thinks that candy corn is not worth eating.
I used to dress up to greet the trick or treaters (as a witch, usually), but now, we live on 3 acres, so we don’t get the kiddos here. The kids in this area go trick or treating downtown and the local businesses hand out candy.
BTW, my kids are out of school today—A SNOW DAY!!!– I’m dumbfounded. There’s less than an inch, but since so many kids live in very rural areas and their roads are bad, everyone gets the day off. Needless to say, my kids are over the moon!

Hello and welcome back to RNTV, Caridad!! We’re so happy you can join us for our Halloween celebration!
I love your chocolate answer!! My favorite Halloween candy is Reese’s peanut butter cups. YUM-O! Though I’m in the minority because I do like candy corn!!
My husband and I will be taking our kids trick-or-treating. My son will be Anakin Skywalker and my daughter will be Thomas the Tank Engine.

Hi Caridad *big wave* — a girl after my own heart. CHOCOLATE!!!! Yes, I cannot resist…
So you went to a Halloween Party dressed as Scully and carried around an alien baby in a jar. Girlfriend…that pretty much takes all the costume stories I’ve heard. I’ve decided to be a “Beastmaster” this year. Not sure what the costume looks like, but it entails having everyone agree with me for the entire day.

Hi guys! Thanks for dropping by to check out the chat and the video interview. I’m so glad that you are all enjoying THE CALLING and am very happy that it’s back in 2009 and 2010 with several more books.
As for trick or treating – I actually did dress up one year as Dracula to answer the door, but I guess I did too good a job because some of the really young kids got a little scared. Oh oh! So now it’s just plain ol’ me for Halloween.
But I’ve been inspired by some of my writing buddies – Tara Nina, CH Admirand and Rayna Vause – to get my act in gear for this year’s RT Convention where I’m heading up the vampire panels. They’ve convinced me I’ve got to do something really fun for the big Vampire Ball there.
I’ll be back later to chat some more!

First off – Blake is a sexy, British, punk vampire who is anti-hero in Caridad’s spring release Fury Calls that I just can’t wait to get my hands on!!
I don’t have any kids of my own – but I live with a friend that has three – and their costumes are adorable – of course a princess, a fairy and the little boy – a lady bug! I am going out with them as a favour to mom – give her some much needed rest – and so that I can see all the other costumes out there! Halloween has to be my favourite time of year – I am going as the sock monster – the one who steals all those missing socks from the dryer. Not getting the treats but the kids helped make the costume so I am able to go out with them – will be a blast!

Can’t wait for Halloween. It’s the time of the year I give myself permission to be a kid for the day. Dress up in some outrageous costume, I haven’t decided who I’ll be yet, and then go to several parties. So I guess I still trick or treat, but I do the grown up version.
Caridad I haven’t read your Calling series yet, but I really enjoyed your South Beach Chicas. It was so much fun. I’ll have to put The Calling on my list of books to read. Will you be doing any more books with The Chicas?
I enjoyed watching the interview and I’m looking forward to reading about Blake, the sexy British vampire in your next book in the series.

Hi Caridad,
Blake is a sexy, British punk vampire who is funny. I haven’t checked out The Calling series yet, but I will soon. I don’t go trick or treating any more. I don’t have kids, so the only time I would go is if I’m hanging out with my niece on Halloween.

Personally, I hate Halloween, so I plan on hiding out… preferably not at home, at some place where I will not be hounded by trick-or-treaters. Hmm, maybe a movie theater.

HI Caridad *waves*
I’ve never been trick or treating, but then….Halloween isn’t very big here at all. When I live, everyone gets excited about Guy Fawkes…except me (I’ve had a few nasty run-ins with firecrackers and try to avoid them where possible
Caridad – I went hunting for The Calling books at my local library (I all but live at the library) as they sound very interesting *grin* and they seem to have them, but under another name – Caridad Scordato. Anyway, is Darkness Calls the first book please? Thank you!
Unfortunately, I can’t watch the interview where I am, but I’ll try too tonight

Hi, Caridad!
So, we know that Blake is sexy, vampire, punk, antihero… and we won’t know exactly how al that will play out until spring. Can we say tease? Tease!
It’s been quite a while since I did any trick or treating–the kidlets, they grow up and move away
–and these days, since there are very few kids in my subdivision, I basically hide in a closet with books and a flashlight to read in peace and quiet

Hi, Caridad! I loved your story in the Holiday With A Vampire book. I love your take on candy corn. Definitely not a treat.

Waving to everyone. VBG! I’m going to really enjoy watching the kids come by and also stash some Butterfingers for myself.
I’m glad you are liking THE CALLING and to answer some of your questions — I used to write as Caridad Scordato for Encanto, but all my latest releases are under Pineiro. No divorce or anything, I just always wanted to use my maiden name.
DARKNESS CALLS is the first book in the series and it featured two of my favoritest characters — Diana Reyes and Ryder Latimer. Diana and Ryder have appeared in every single CALLING book and I revisited their story in DEATH CALLS. Will there by another one with them?
Well, the proposal is written and for those of you who read FATE CALLS in HOLIDAY WITH A VAMPIRE you know the new twist I’m adding to the CALLING mythology. It will definitely impact on Diana and Ryder in the future (that’s a special RNTV Scoop!)
As for the CHICAS, I really loved doing the stories, but right now the series is in hiatus. I hope to revive it in the future because Adriana and Juliana still need to have their Happily-Ever-Afters!
Thanks so much for dropping by to find out about HONOR CALLS and FURY CALLS. I have to tell you that both of these stories almost wrote themselves!
If you’re not one of the lucky DESIRE CALLS sampler winners, be sure to drop by the Harlequin Paranormal Romance Blog to download an e-book version, but hurry. The e-book will only be available until October 31st!

Blake…he’s in love with the young punkette he turned, right?
I gave up trick or treating by the time I was 15. What I understand from my two in college daughters is that it is never too late to go trick or treating…the treats get better. Hmm.
(When I was young, we used to use pillow cases to hold the candy. Sometimes they got so full, we had to go home and dump out the candy before we could start out to finish the route. Those were the good old days….)
