Meet Lieutenant Howard “Six-Pack” Paxton—
one of the handsome, hard-bodied firefighters of Station Five.
Four-alarm fires have nothing on him…
Howard may love being a firefighter and riding his Harley, but there’s nothing he values more than his bachelorhood. That is, until a feisty, curvaceous teacher named Kat McKenna falls into his arms at the scene of a fire—and melts the six-foot-six tower of bronze muscle…
But just as passion ignites between them—and they explore new heights of sexual ecstasy—a ruthless arsonist with a deadly secret and a thirst for vengeance becomes their worst nightmare… (from jodavis.net)
RNTV: Hi Jo! Welcome to RNTV and congratulations on your debut novel Trial by Fire. I just finished reading it and Woo Hoo, is all I’ve got to say. Five fabulous, hard bodied, courageous, scintillating fireman and one spirited, gusty, and tough firewoman – what a way to start a series – The Firefighters of Station Five. Your first book in the series introduces us to Howard “Six-Pack” Paxton and Kat McKenna. ‘Meeting’ Howard on the first pages of the book took my breath away. I know it’s a mundane question, but I’m very curious – who/what was your inspiration for your fire fighters?
Jo: Thank you, Marisa! It’s thrilling to know my Station Five heroes are receiving such an enthusiastic response from readers. I believe that’s because they represent the All-American man. These are family men from all walks of life, men who will lay their lives on the line for citizens without a second thought, guys who are as close as brothers and work as a team. All of these qualities held huge appeal to me as an author looking for a fresh, big, hero-driven series to write, and these are what inspired me.
RNTV: This is the first book in the series and we were introduced to all the fire fighters and got a glimpse into their hopes, dreams, demons and fears. Did you know from the very beginning where you were going to go with this series? Do you have all the books planned out?
Jo: I knew from the start where I wanted this series to begin and end—starting with Howard “Six-Pack” Paxton and ending with our sad, tragic Captain Sean Tanner. These guys literally strolled into my office and introduced themselves, and I was blown away. Immediately, I began typing and wrote the outline for the entire series, complete with character sketches and plot blurbs, in one day. The next two books in the series (UNDER FIRE and HIDDEN FIRE) are set to go. The last two books are planned as far as the basic plot and character arc. Right now, the end of the series is Sean Tanner’s story, and promises to be explosive on every level.
RNTV: I personally love fire fighters, IMO they are true heroes. I’ve actually had them visit my house due to leaving eggs on the stove too long and causing major alarms to go off. They couldn’t have been nicer when they rushed up to my home only to find 2 very burnt eggs, lots of smoke and no fire. So I’m wondering did you get to do hands on research for this series, talk to any fire fighters, visit any fire stations?
Jo: Ooh, yes—it’s a tough job to do “hands on” research with firefighters, but stand back ladies, somebody has to do it! Writing the outline of the plot blurbs and characters was easy, but when it came to the nitty gritty of what their day is like, the trucks and equipment, the unbelievable variety of situations they must handle and how…well, I couldn’t even begin chapter 1 of TRIAL until I’d visited several fire stations and interviewed the firefighters. There’s simply no shortcut for research when you’re writing about a totally new subject. They were great, answering scores of questions and touring me around, dressing me in the heavy coat, mask, and air tank! I have one station and captain in particular who helps me with accuracy in my scenes, and even enacted a firefighting scene from TRIAL with me—which I promptly had to revise! I have nothing but the highest respect for these real-life heroes.
RNTV: You have a Masters in Education and spent 16 years teaching – now you’re a published author. How long did it take for you to get here and what was the process like?
Jo: I’ve been writing for 7 years and it took me almost 6 to sell. I was teaching full-time for the first few years and had to set aside time every evening after a long day, dinner, and my kids’ homework to write. I’d write until around midnight, then get up at 6 a.m. and do it all again. I wrote on weekends like a madwoman. I was totally focused and driven to succeed, and when I’d hear the negative percentages of how many writers never get published, I filed that it the garbage where it belonged. For me, it was a matter of when, not if. I’ve wanted to be a published author my whole life, so badly I could taste it. That’s what it takes to succeed, and if my students took away nothing else from my lessons, I hope they learned to never, never, let anyone or anything stand in the way of your dreams.
RNTV: If someone were to write a romance novel of your life – what sub-genre of romance would it be? And what character would you play?
Jo: Let’s see, I’m a woman of modern conveniences, so historical is out! LOL. I do love a hot cowboy, though, so I’d have to go with a contemporary set on a ranch. I’m the feisty, gorgeous (ehem) owner and he’s the younger-than-me-by-ten-years stud! Of course, his poor little heart has been broken, and I’m right there to mend it. Let Jo make it all better, cowboy.
RNTV: Can you give us a hint on what you’re working on now and what book in the series to expect next?
Jo: UNDER FIRE is the next book in the Firefighters series and is Zack Knight’s story, to be released in May 2009. After that, I have an erotic thriller being released in August 2009 from NAL Heat titled WHEN ALEX WAS BAD. Stay tuned in the next few weeks for a big announcement regarding ALEX…and that’s all I can really say for now! Naughty of me, huh?
RNTV: Thanks so much for answering all my questions and for spending the day with us. Now I’ll turn it over to our readers so they can ask you some questions.
Jo:You’re very welcome and thanks for inviting me!

Yes, I’ve always known I wanted to be a writer someday. In the 3rd grade, I made illustrated story books and charged classmates .25 cents each to buy them! No joke. I had Coke money for the vending machine every day after school! I was rich! That desire to tell stories never went away, it was just put on hold for a while.
